Following his residency at Centre Intermondes, Lorenzo Muratorio presents his exhibition of ceramics, exploring the dualities between natural and imaginary, material and symbolic.
Lorenzo Muratorio, winner of the 7th Alliance Française Prize for Contemporary Art, spent two months in residence at Intermondes. A Natureza das Criaturas (Nature of Creatures) is the fruit of this creative residency. Through ceramics, the artist explores the dualities between natural and imaginary, material and symbolic, probing the depths of the human subconscious and the natural world. The works - hooks, oysters and masks - oscillate between the familiar and the strange, questioning our relationship to the visible and the invisible. Water, omnipresent and symbolic, acts as a common thread, evoking depth, instability and human contradictions. The exhibition invites us to look beyond appearances and reflect on what can be captured, transformed or revealed.
In his artistic practice, Lorenzo Muratorio explores the boundaries between craft, design and art through the creation of ceramic objects and sculptures. Since 2018, he has taken an interest in historical and symbolic forms such as jars, amphorae and candelabras, which he revisits to question their ritual, corporeal and symbolic meanings. Playing with shapes, textures and colors, Lorenzo Muratorio questions notions such as function, decoration, attraction and repulsion. Using ceramics, the artist seeks to go beyond a strictly rational or categorical interpretation, developing a hybrid poetics where the artificial and the natural mingle. This work invites us to rethink the possible contexts and relationships with these emblematic objects.
