Exhibition - Echoes of a Ransom / Debt - Mildor Chevalier
Centre Intermondes Ethnopôle Humanités océanes - 11 bis rue des Augustins
17000 - La Rochelle
In 2025, the Echoes of a Ransom / Debt exhibition commemorates the bicentenary of Charles X's decree imposing a colossal sum on Haiti in return for its independence.
This initiative, led by the Bohio Ayiti association in collaboration with Haitian artist Mildor Chevalier and Intermondes - Humanités océanes, aims to raise public awareness of the legacy of this ransom, promote recognition of this shared history and encourage reconciliation between Haiti and France.
Through a series of immersive and symbolic installations, the exhibition explores the themes of ransom, resilience and the unbreakable ties between the two nations. Between memory and creation, it bears witness to the wounds of colonialism, while opening up a reflection on reparation and renewal.

Mildor Chevalier is a Brooklyn-based Haitian visual artist. He will be welcomed at Intermondes as part of his Echoes of a Ransom / Debt exhibition project, which commemorates the bicentenary of Charles X's decree that imposed a heavy debt on Haiti for its independence. Curated by Bohio Ayiti, Mildor Chevalier and Intermondes, the exhibition explores the impact of this debt through immersive installations. Addressing memory, resilience and social justice, it invites reflection on the historical ties between Haiti and France, fostering dialogue and reconciliation.

This event is part of the Mois des Mémoires 2025 program, which takes place every May in La Rochelle.

Mildor Chevalier was born in 1982 in La Victoire, a commune in northern Haiti. He began his artistic career at the Altos de Chavón school of visual arts in the Dominican Republic, before moving to New York and taking courses at Parsons The New School for Design and then the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), developing a singular artistic language in which painting, drawing, sculpture and illustration intertwine. His work explores themes of belonging, memory and identity, both individual and collective. Recognized for his large abstract figurative canvases, his creations have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art of the Dominican Republic, the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum in New York, as well as in Asia and Europe. Winner of the Darryl Chappell Foundation "Artist of the Year" award in 2022, he teaches at the New York School of the Arts and collaborates on artistic and educational projects.
