When were privateers last active under sail? 18th century? 19th century? Well no, it was during the First World War that a German naval officer was still chasing Allied ships... under sail!
A brilliant bad pupil!
A bad, bad pupil at school, Felix von Luckner disappeared from home at the age of 13. After sailing the world's seas to become an officer in Wilhelm II's army, he returned to his family after 15 years of adventures. But his greatest adventure was yet to come: from Wilhelm II himself, Luckner was given a privateering mission during the 14-18 war, far from the trenches. Luckner's war claimed only one life, by accident, and he took on board all the crews of the 16 enemy ships sunk by the sea. And all will praise the humanism and joie de vivre of this extraordinary man.
Perhaps, beyond the German flag, it will be said that he loved his true flag so much: sailing.
