Saunier - the salt producer - is a rare and exceptional profession. It has more than 1,000 years of history, but has remained almost unchanged. It is practiced by fewer than 300 people all along the Atlantic coast, including just over a hundred on the Ile de Ré.

Saunière - a salt producer - is even rarer. There are around a hundred in all, and fewer than 10 on the Ile de Ré. Michèle Jean-Bart is one of them. Behind a few grains of salt, there's a lot to tell: the salt marshes, the evolution of the seasons, salt production, the role of the activity in maintaining a specific biodiversity...

Isabelle Autissier, Marie Detré, Christine Dupuy, Camille Parrain, Estelle Massias, Sarah Steyeart, Sandrine Gourlet, Camille Ollier, Laurence Gaté... Femmes de mer aims to spotlight artists, scientists, sailors and authors whose careers are singular and resolutely turned towards the Ocean... The aim is also to encourage the feminization of a maritime world that has long remained male-dominated.
