Place Bernard Moitessier
17000 - La Rochelle
When the sea invites itself into the life of Robert Doisneau...
85 photographs and 35 years of stories: a tender and nostalgic heritage of the French seaside.

La Rochelle is pleased to be the first coastal city to host the photographic exhibition "Allons voir la mer avec Doisneau", at the Musée Maritime from 11 May to 1 November 2021, in the hall of the former Encan. The opening date remains subject to authorizations related to sanitary measures.

The work of Robert Doisneau (1912-1994) extends far beyond Paris and its suburbs. Through press reports, advertising commissions or simply family holidays, he took his curious, cheeky and benevolent eye along the French coastline. The exploration of sixty years of photography through the theme of the sea has led the Baluze company to bring to light often unpublished photographs by the man who described himself as a "fisherman of images".

From Boulogne to Menton, via La Turballe, Le Havre, Deauville, Le Guilvinec, La Baule, Île de Ré, La Rochelle, Royan, Les Sables-d'Olonne, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Marseille, Toulon and Saint-Tropez: Allons voir la mer avec Doisneau is a magnificent walk along the seashore, from beaches to ports and even underwater, in the company of fishermen, bathers, divers and sailors for a day. The exhibition presented in La Rochelle is composed of 85 original black and white prints in 30x40 format and a selection of works more specifically linked to La Rochelle and its immediate environment which will be presented on high definition screens.
