La Rochelle on a grey day… our ideas!

Yes, at La Rochelle the weather is sometimes moody... Never mind!  Here are some ideas and activities while awaiting the return (imminent, of course) of the sunshine!

Go sightseeing at La Rochelle

La Rochelle is a city full of history and stories to discover at many sites and monuments. Go right into the heart of each one of them to fully understand this maritime city and let yourself embark for sometimes surprising discoveries… Rain or shine, you will be totally immersed in the heritage and landmarks of La Rochelle:

The three Towers of La Rochelle will surprise you with their special features and the breathtaking view over the ports and the city. Every year and in every season, the Centre des Monuments comes up with a rich cultural season for you: exhibitions, concerts, stories, workshops for children, guided tours with events… bright ideas to discover this remarkable heritage!

At La Rochelle Aquarium, over 12,000 marine animals are on display for you. The best plan? As the Aquarium is open every day until 11 pm in July and August, take advantage of the evenings to discover it during the quiet off-peak hours and avoid the long queues! Think about buying “no-queue” tickets too, available at the Tourism Office ticket counter.

Don’t forget the many museums to visit in the city… without getting wet! The Museum of Natural History, the Museums of Art and History, the Museum of the New World, the Museum of the Protestant History of La Rochelle, the Maritime Museum, the Museum of Robots and Scale Models… there’s something for everyone in the many permanent and temporary collections.

Original: tour the La Rochelle bunker! Built right in the city-centre of La Rochelle is an incredible 300 m² concrete blockhouse dating back to 1941, offering an opportunity to discover the history of La Rochelle through its scenography, from 1939 to May 8, 1945, the date of its liberation!

Have fun and try an activity

Whether you have come with friends or family, don’t be discouraged by bad weather - take advantage of it to go swimming in an aquatic park (yes, you can swim even in the rain!), work out at the gym or laugh together around a game of cards or monopoly!

No children to take care of? Pamper yourself! Thalasso, balneotherapy or well-being centres… in one single word: relax.

And why not try your luck at the Casino Barrière La Rochelle? Enjoy the superb equipment on the Mall in the city-centre: a panoramic view over the ocean and events of all kinds await you all year round.

Go shopping

La Rochelle has a definite advantage that is both aesthetic and practical: its shopping arcades! Under these architectural masterpieces are lots of shops selling clothing, decorative objects and other souvenirs to take home!

Get comfortable in the cinema

Sheltered from the rain and comfortably settled in a red plush chair in one of the cinemas of La Rochelle watching a good film, you can forget about the weather and escape! Three cinemas open their doors for you:

Old Port: CGR Dragon Cinema; Verdun Square: CGR Olympia Cinema; District of Minimes: Mega CGR Cinema.

It’s raining and you’re smiling? It’s normal.
