From Esnandes to Marsilly

There are places where nature will remain more important than anything. This is the case at the top of the Pointe Saint-Clément, at Esnandes, where you can admire the majestic Aiguillon Bay.

However, this is probably not what Patrice Walton thought when his ship sank there in the 13th century! This man’s first thought was to find something to eat. He sank pickets into the mud with nets attached to catch some of the many migratory birds. What was his surprise when he discovered, a few hours later, not birds that had been caught, but hundreds of mussels clinging to the stakes. Mussel beds were created!

In the pretty municipality of Esnandes, the Maison de la Baie du Marais Poitevin welcomes you to show you how mussels are farmed and the ecosystem of Aiguillon Bay in the Museum of Mussel Culture. And right opposite this museum, don’t forget to climb the steps of the stained glass fortress: the fortified church of Saint-Martin! From its sentry walk, set off to see the Poitevin Marshes and the Ocean…

This is a pleasant starting point for a walk along the coast by way of the Port de la Pelle at Marsilly, a municipality with a tradition of shellfish farming. There is a calm and authentic atmosphere on the roads between the sea and the land… curious; take advantage of it to discover the Museum of Ancient Graffiti set up in a building dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. And if you are a golfing fan, go in and play a round at the Golf de la Prée, a name that refers to the origin of the land, which was a salt meadow for raising cattle, where the fabulous setting opposite the ocean will surely captivate you.

Between walking and sightseeing, you will have a wonderful day!
